  A Unique Business

The Kootenay Bakery Café Cooperative is a unique business in the larger world of bakeries and cafés.  Here are some qualities that make us unique:

  ·         We are a “scratch” bakery. This means that we start with raw ingredients inorder to prepare  the products that are sold.  We use no mixes here!

  ·         All of the flour, seeds, vegetables, fruits and many other ingredients are certified organic and as local as we can source.  The remaining ingredients are as pure and natural as possible.

  ·         Many alternative grains such as spelt, kamut and rice are used making products suitable for some restricted diets.

  ·         The community is connected to the bakery: some people hold “preferred shares” as a green investment, some sell the bakery the fruits and vegetables that they grow organically in their  gardens, some have special dietary needs that can be satisfied in the bakery, and many others visit the bakery a few times a week to meet with friends to enjoy both the atmosphere as well as the nutritious foods.

·         Our community extends beyond Nelson to include both distance customers and ingredient suppliers.  We are also sponsors of a Foster Child and have been since the bakery opened.
